Every book, care sheet, and web site says to repot at the end of the dormant period.
Why wait until the end?
Here, the leaves will fall off in mid November or a little later, and then the leaves will come back some time in January or as late as early March. In late December and early January i will have lots of free time, so why not do the repotting then?

If the plant is not growing, it will not repair damage done to it. So you repot now, and the plant does not repair the damage till march. Or the very least, it will repair very slowly. With the risk of jnfection and damage.
That being said.. many commercial growers repot at other times. It is not ideal, but can be done. If i am short for time, i start earlier too but still on the other end of the domant period.

One of my small problems is that the trees don't end their dormant periods predictably. Last January the elms suddenly had leaves popping out and a couple others did, too. All of a sudden, drop everything, etc. Most of the others were predictably a month later.
I was hoping to avoid that. I guess not.
