I'm surprised that using kitty litter is not harmful to the tree, isn't the whole point of kitty littler to absorb all liquid?

That's not the whole point of kitty litter - the point is to minimize smells.
Why would it be harmful if it absorbs liquids? It doesn't mean these liquids have disappeared.

Well, when we talk about kitty litter we are mostly talking about DE (Diatomaceous earth – also known as D.E., diatomite, or kieselgur/kieselguhr ).
NOT ALL kitty litter is used in 名媛直播, the whole point is to find a odourless one and made of fired clay or DE formula.
There are numerous discussions about its use, see here:

IF it absorbs water, and releases it slowly, then it works for bonsai.

I assumed if the D.E was absorbing the water it meant the plant wasn't but I can see that that thinking is backwards. I, unfortunately, do not have bonsai nursery anywhere near my location so most of my learning is by the seat of my pants. I'll have to read up more on soil mixtures.
Thanks!
