Repotting Dilemna- proper soil vs proper repotting season was created by Trimmer

First off, hello! I'm new to this forum and to 名媛直播 in general. Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated.
A few weeks ago, I stupidly bought a healthy little Chinese Elm with minimal research (though I made sure it was okay for my region and I'm keeping it outside) and assumed since I like the nursery it's from for other plants that it would be in a proper soil/mix. It is, as you may have guessed, in normal potting soil, which I didn't realize was an issue. It's also, I think, very young, probably a cutting, and not ready to be shaped yet?- correct me if I'm wrong.
So, I have clearly missed repotting season, and the little dude just started a wave of new growth, which I know means it's a terrible time to repot. Shall I risk it, and just replace the soil outside the rootball with Akadama without touching the roots? I really don't want root rot. Or do I just water less and hope for the best? Let it go wild and put in in a normal sized pot, then treat it as pre-bonsai in a few years when the shape is less ugly? Thanks in advance.

Don't worry about it. Good potting soil is no issue. Leave it alone. It is happy as it is. Just make sure you water when needed and not on a schedule and there should be no issues. In winter protect it against continuous rain.

An impulse buy... like we see so often, but other than usual, you have already done research. You did actually pick a tree that indeed does look healthy and it's growing so you must be doing somehing right.
And, as it's growing, I wouldn't worry about the soil. Keep doing what you're doing. It's a small pot, so be careful to not let it dry out.
Indeed it's not really a bonsai yet, it's young and needs to grow and be trained. I'd wait with that until you've learned how to do that. For now, you need to keep it healthy and let it grow.

It's not that ugly. The only problem is that big bulge. That needs to be corrected, and you can do that by letting it grow.Yes, you can put it in a large pot, but not too large - as that gives problems watering it (soil on the outside staying too wet). You do not really need akadama now.
