Fukien tea soil concerns was created by Ficus Balackay

Hello bonsai enthusiasts,

I have just recently purchased a Fukien tea tree from a local bonsai nursery. After being told to repot soon and after an abundance of research I have been left with a few concerns:

1) Some roots are starting to come out of the top of my soil.
2) my soil top layer is almost hard to the touch, it's moist but will not give easily to pressure as I would expect. If this is consistent throughout the pot I can't see this being healthy for the tree
3) I realized that there were ants that carry small white cylindrical objects into a tiny cave they built into the side of my tree's soil.
4) I apparently purchased a snail that seemed to be part of a package deal.
5) My research tells me I should re-pot at the beginning of May using a mixture of different types of soil, yet every webpage says something different I just want a soil mixture that I know will get the job done.
6) EDIT: I also have lost about 20 leaves to yellowing over the past 4-5 days.

Any advice based on my concerns is considered helpful. Thank You.
P.S. I have attached some pictures for your viewing pleasures.

It seems root bound.
The "hole" in the soil is of some concern, maybe an air pocket during last repot.
Take the snail off if it bothers you.
Ants are milking aphids usually; take care of both if possible.
White cylindrical things are eggs, no?
Yes, it needs repotting and it needs good bonsai soil. Any good mixture like Akadama, pumice and lava rock (try Boon's Mix in Amazon) will do.
IF IT WERE MINE (it is NOT), I would go for a bare root repot. At the right time, with the right temperature.

Hey, thanks for your response.
Does the snail have any chance of doing harm?
The white things I'm not entirely sure what they are google says this: "The pupae of certain ants are encased in white cocoons that look like miniature bags of flour. These are the little white bundles that the ant's rescue first." It seems that it is an egg of some sort.
What would you consider the right time and temperature? is this a risk to the tree? I live in southern Florida and we're on our way out of spring and moving into the hotter summer months.

So the time is now, right now. Before summer.

I'd say that if there are ants, a hole and ants carrying white cylindrical things, the hole is an ants nest and the ants are moving the eggs to a new space.
Could be useful to see if the ants are trying to get away (carrying the eggs elsewhere).

How cute. The ants are building a nurcery in your soil :).

I like ants, but dont Think that bonsai pot is the best place for them. I guess this is one of few situations where completelly drowning the whole rootball for a few minutes would be an appropriate advice. If you dont want an ants nest in your soil that is.
