I get my akadama from an old man that are trained in bonsai in Japan. He uses the same one himself. So I am sure it is not the cheap stuff. By the price tag it is not.
But he keeps all his trees above zero all winter in heated greenhouse. I keep mine in unheated greenhouse which normally freeze in night and thav in the day. All pots with akadama must be repotted in spring. The vandors trees lasts 2 winters. I just dont want to repot that often, preferably when the tree needs it.
By the way: who designed the akadama?

Nature. It is a naturally occuring clay.
Could make you wonder. In the country where they took bonsai to the level it is now, just happens to occur the only natural substrate best suited for bonsai? Bit of a coincidink!?
I am not a fan, and I am not convinced it has magical properties.
To me it is just yellow mud in spring.

I potted an outdoor plant in pure akadama. It did fine all summer, then December came. Around here that means the temps dropped below freezing then rose above freezing about a dozen times and I watched the akadama crumble. Indoor plants with the same akadama retain the same pellet sizes of half a centimeter and the outdoor has crumbled to less than a millimeter.
No more akadama for me. I want repot when the tree wants it, not when the guy selling akadama wants it.

One advantage of living in the tropics is we never ever get this freeze/thaw cycles.
So soil and pots don't crumble.
