Hi there!
I'm new to the bonsai world and just gifted my first bonsai, which was a juniper bonsai. It came in a kit from amazon, and contained a soil that was comprised of perlite, sphagnum peat moss & pine bark. I planted the bonsai in this soil but I am worried that a this soil is holding too much water - I tried watering until the water came out of the bottom of pot and it never did. Is this soil composition ok for a juniper? If not, how should i approach this and what soil mixture should I switch to? The bonsai came already potted in this soil mixture as well.
Thanks in advance!

The mix is fine. Do the pot have drainage holes?

Yes they do. There are 1.5" diameter drainage holes with a built in grid over them to make sure soil doesn't fall out.

Then do not repot now. Do it in late winter or early spring.

Can you show a picture of the soil used, and the planted tree?
It sounds like it could indeed be holding a lot of water, which can cause problems if you do not adjust your care.

Here are 2 images of the plant itself and a close up of the soil it's in.

Do not repot in the middle of the summer.

It looks OK. The pot is quite large for the size of your plant, which on the one hand will allow it to grow quite a bit. On the other hand, the soil IS quite water retentive, so you need to be careful that you allow the soil to dry a little between watering sessions.

Hmmm interesting. I did notice that it was larger than most other bonsai pots, but not knowing any better went with it because it came with the kit. I've settled on 150 ml per watering and not watering until a chopstick barely changes colour after being dipped in the soil for about 10 seconds.
Thanks everyone for the help!
