Can you transplant moss? I have several trees, planted in various bonsai substrates (akadama, pumice, lava rock, and 1 has pine bark), but if I water them via dunking method (putting the whole pot in a large pot of water) then some of the substrate will float up.

I want to learn about moss so I can stop that from happening. There's some moss growing in my back yard, so I know it can survive where I live - see photo. Can I transplant it? Or is there a way to naturally propagate moss on top of substrate?

Or are there certain types of mosses I should specifically look into purchasing?

Dunk watering sufficates the roots. You should only use this method in emergency cases when the soil has dried out too much.

Normal watering should be done from above with a fine nossle. Spraying the whole surface until there are a steady stream coming out the drainage holes. That way the roots gets both air and water.

Regarding your question about transplanting Moss, the answer is yes. We do it for shows only. It has no benefit other than aestetic. If moss grows naturally in your area and you are watering correct moss will grow in your pot without you mowing it there. And your task should be to remove not add.

As usual, Tropfrog got it right. Let me add one thing.

Keep the moss off of the tree.

It can sit on soil just fine and can keep soil from washing away, but if it gets on the bark it will keep it wet and the bark will rot away. It is very hard to get the moss off without damaging the bark.

I have a sprinkler head nozzle for watering as well. Good to know re:dunk watering
