Hi all,

Recently got my first bonsai tree and it's a dwarf pomegranate in what I assume is regular potting soil. The soil seems to be moderate to moderately poor drained and I was wondering if I should repot to in a more well drained soil??

This is not a bonsai, it may be in 15 or 20 years. Has the pot got a hole in the base? if not it needs to be changed PDQ otherwise you will have a dead Pomegranate. The soil needs to be free draining.

I never recomend beginners to hurry into repotting newly purshased trees. It is stressful for the tree and if the tree dies, you have no idea if it was the repotting or your care and climate. You will not learn anything.

The tree has been produced in that very soil. If it is good for comercial production it is good for a beginner in bonsai. Maybe not the best soil for long term development, but that should not be the goal for now. Right now survival should be the only goal.

If it is not draining at all, you could use a shop stick to scratch the surface and poke some holes about 50% of the deapth of the root ball. That will improve drainage for now.

The picture looks like the tree is kept indoors. They don't survive very well indoors and you should put it outside.?
