Good day,
I've had this Brazilian flame bush for over a year now.? I kept it indoors during winter.? It has lost very few leafs during winter.? It is now growing very actively.? It is my understanding that it is an evergreen bush. Does anyone know if it is ok to repot it into a bigger pot now, in April?? My concern is that I bought it in a rather small bonsai pot, and it is now pot bound.? Also, do you know what type of soil it needs?
Thank you!

If you are in the nortern hemisphere and you are about to uppot it, the answer is yes.
If you are in the soutern hemisphere the answer is no.
If you are in the nortern hemisphere and are about to do a root work you better be far up north. In other cases this is a no as well.
Pot bound is not a problem for the health of the tree. It is just makes repotting harder and can be a problem for developing a nice nebari. If the soil drains well there are no reason to repot that has to do with health. Actually, repotting in the way we do in bonsai with root pruning do decrease health short term. Always make sure you do it on healthy trees at the right time of the year.

Thank you for such a detailed and helpful advice! Do you know the best time to prune / trim it?? A couple of shoots have grown way out of the proportions of the tree. Thank you again!

My calliandra is too young yet. Just got it thrue its first winter. But I would hard prune at the same time of the year as repotting. Just before it starts to grow for the season. However, I never do hard pruning and repotting the same year. One year inbetween minimum.
Small pruning for maintenance and ramification I do during the growing season. Just not all the time. It is important to let a tree grow vigourously inbetween maintenance prunings.? depending on how vigorous it grows 1-3 times per season. The tree needs to grow ugly before one prunes it back. Trying to keep the trees tidy and best looking at all times suffocates it.
