Here is my privet.
Last year I started a "layer" in a deep pot to reduce the height of this tree. I left it until now. The results were far less spectacular that I had hoped. The layer produced only 3 small roots, so I don't know if this tree is going to make it.
The bottom of the tree however has produced an insane amount of roots.Rather than throwing the bottom away I decided to try my hand at root cuttings. Here they are in a pot. Maybe some day a group planting....

Aww sorry to hear the ground layer didn't work as you expected, hopefully the tree continues to grow. Good use of the roots

If it does pull through I will do absolutely nothing to this tree until next year. Then I'll resume training it. I really hope it lives. I like this tree.

I think I used a macro shot of it's branches and leaves. I took that last summer. I change my picture all the time.

I'm still not getting my hopes up too much but I see the slightest bit of green on the branches. It might make it.
Fingers crossed.

Signs of life
I think the small amount of roots may have been enough for it to survive. The buds are swollen and turning green.....

hooray thats great...loosing all those roots will actually be better for bonsai purposes it will be weaker which will give you smaller internodal branching  theres a bonsai term if ive ever seen one
