New to this forum and need help.
Got lucky, as my brother-in-law's grandpa (90-yrs old buddhist monk) gave me a few of his bonsai! He's recovering from cancer, and hasn't been attending to the trees that well in recent years, it seems. Just repotted a royagaki (persimmon with miniature fruits), which probably hadn't been repotted in quite a few years, if ever (it was potted in the clay they often come in at purchase, and it took me 3 hrs to work my way through the mess; now it's in 70% akadama, 30% kiryuu).
I ruthlessly cut away the long and windy thick roots that were circling allover the pot, only to find that there's a huge vertical root bulge vertically below the trunk. The wire that had once attached the tree to the little mesh covering the drain hole has grown into the root bulge (there's almost an inch of solid root below it!). The mesh bit probably is also in there--never found it... Didn't have a proper saw at hand, and have never cut that huge roots before, and need advice.
1. Now that it's back in a pot, I guess I shouldn't touch it for a few years?
2. Next time I repot, I want to be prepared. How to get rid off a huge vertical root? Just saw it away?
PS. Any hints where to buy bonsai stuff in or around Tokyo? Saitama bonsaimura? Took me a week to find a pot... The few shops I ran into that do sell bonsai would offer to repot my trees for me, and didn't want to tell where to just buy a pot...

how lucky you are to be given this tree...do you have any pics we would all love to see it .as for the root bulge as long as the roots above it are plentiful enough to support the tree it would be fine to cut it off .i am from the u.s. so cant help with the nursery locations im sure a internet search will help

Funny to hear you are in Tokyo and have a hard time finding bonsai supplies.. Have you considered taking this tree to one of the 'bonai villages' close to Tokyo? If not one of the masters, then for sure one of the apprentices will be able to advice you rootwork, repotting etc. I cannot see the tree, and do not have any clue as to which state and status aforementioned tree has. However, as you make a point that this tree comes from a 0-year ld person, one could assume we are dealing with some old pieces? Do you have a picture?

Thanks for your replies.
The tree is doing great. Still have no pics though, and won't take it out of the pot to get a picture of the root until next spring. Will take pics of the tree itself and start another topic
I'm not looking for a nursery, just supplies, or more precisely, pots. Many florists and gardening shops do sell bonsai, but no supplies. Scissors, saws, tools, soil etc. I find at home centers with big gardening departments, but nobody sells bonsai pots. Nonetheless, allover Tokyo people have beautiful bonsai in their beautifully landscaped gardens. I guess their bonsai are repotted by the same gardeners they annually hire to trim the all the other plants.
The 'bonsai village' (bonsaimura) is in Saitama north of Tokyo, quite a train ride from where I live, and the exact opposite direction of my daily commute. Obviously that is where I have to go for pots and info. Will report once I find a bonsai pot dealer (I'm still talking about ceramics, not the other type of "pot").

Your tree sounds so interesting! You are so lucky lol
Looking forward to the pictures of it, may I ask how old your tree is?
