When transferring a nursery tree into a bonsai pot, should all the soil be removed from the root ball? Otherwise, you will have two different soils in the pot with different water absorbtion, drainage, and other small differences. The soil on the outside may be dry, but the soil still around the root ball could still be wet.
What are your thoughts/recommendations?

Try to remove as much as the old soil as possible without damaging the roots too much. I think most of whatever is left on the rootball will be washed out and mixed with the new soil, being the new soil very dry and with great drainage. I hear your pain... some nursery plants have such terrible soil, it is really hard to get it all out.
