Hi Guys

I'm new to join the bonsai community and i started my first seed on the 18th march from a kit i got from my partner. following the instructions was to keep the pot inside a polythene bag for 2-3 weeks and then into a refrigerator for 3-6 weeks. When checking my seed about 2 weeks ago i have seen one had sprouted (Update ive got multiple that have sprouted now) Is it still recommended that i need to put it in the fridge for 3-6 weeks? or leave now to just keep growing??

Any advice would be much appreciated?

Thanks
OIlie

I would carefully pick up the germinated seeds and pot them up. The rest I would put back in the frigde.?

There are no such thing as bonsai seeds. They are just normal, overpriced tree seeds.

bonsai is created from trees. Trees grown from seeds. The timeline between the tree germinating and the bonsai creation process is 5-10 years if grown in ground. If grown in small pots it takes more than 10 years.

That is why most of us creates bonsai from mature starter trees or garden center materials. And almost noone in the hobby grow bonsai from seeds.

I have grown bonsai from seeds in eight years now. My best trees are grown from seed. Just some patience thats all, and enjoy the process

I am curious how big they have grown. Have they been in pots all eight years or in the ground?

We always say that they take a long time to get big enough to be called bonsai. For some reason I just put a handful of bald cypress seeds in a large pot and now have a dozen seedlings, probably the best I have ever done with seeds, and I wonder what future I can expect.?

I have grown some in the ground, some in big pots, some in small pots, some indoor and some outdoor. A lot of different seeds, different species. Some are big some are small. Some are sticks and some are ramified. We should not discourage growing from seeds. Thats all. Of course there are faster and easier ways to accuire a mature bonsai.? But that was not the question was it?

I too enjoy growing trees from seeds and cuttings.

This thread is about a beginner that just got a package of "bonsai seeds". I was not talking about if growing trees from seed is fun and rewarding. I was talking about weather "bonsai seeds" is a good start in the hobby.

so please tell me. Is there anyone experienced in the hobby here that actually think a grow your own bonsai kit is a good introduction to the hobby?

Sometimes beginners do not have the frame work to ask the right questions. This is a great example. The only knowledge is basically what is written on that scam box. Off cource the right questions to start this hobby in a good way cannot be expressed.

but yes, you are totally right, I did not answer the question as it was asked. I did not do it with a vicious intention. I did it to help guide into a better start to the hobby. I think it benefits op and the hobby more than beeing straight on point.

Hi @Tropfrog

I now know this from more research and gaining interest in the Hobby, i totally understand where you was coming from and no bad intentions were made.

Thank you all for your responses. Yes both seeds have germinated, i have two pots. 1 pot seems to have a pine which is slowly growing and also the other pot i have another pine with some other seedlings but cannot determine what type of tree it is yet.?

The only other issue i have now is the one of the pines is close to the other type of tree i mentioned. Would it be best if i seperate this into its own pot? When is it good to move them into its own pot and look at adding in the recommended soil/substrates to use??

Thanks for all your replies.?
