leaves will drop soon anyway, so no use doing it now.
Just start in spring when leaves have hardened of.
Why do you place the tree in the greenhouse??

Not much to explain really, it's something i learned over the years and works well; My guess is that the bacteria that thrive on the milk mixture kill the mildew virus, or the milk mixture itself prevents the virus from growing,... Only thing i know is that mildew dies if apllied on infected leaves ( the leaves will not recover but new growth will not be infected anymore) and it even works preventive if you apply before infection.Could you explain this milk/water thing ? I've never heard of it before?

Hi,
I was led to believe it’s best to keep all my bonsai trees from the Autumn onwards here in the Uk just in case there is a sudden unexpected frost in the night. ?What’s your advice on that please.
Thanks
Ian

Who on earth told you that?
Just look at the trees in your local forest, do they go inside if it's cold outside? Most trees ( except the (sub)tropical species) need cold/frost.Apart from needing the cold, the temperatures in your greenhouse change way too much and the damp, enclosed climate is a recipe for all kinds of bugs/diseases.
I only protect? ( iow place them on the ground between some shrubs) my trees if deep? ( -5-10 )frost over a longer period is predicted. And its not the cold/frost that is dangerous but when the rootball is frozen solid? the wind which dries out the roots completely? ( due to sublimation)?

I am in western Sweden and keep most of my trees in unheated greenhouse in winter. Outdoors the soil stays solid frozen for 4-8 weeks. In the greenhouse, some days the sun makes it thaw just enough to give the trees a small drink. Just what is needed. And there are no wind to accelerate drying.
But here most enthusiasts keep their trees frost free during winter.
Last winter I visited wendorff bonsai close to Berlin. They keep all trees in greenhouse all year round.

Magnus, of course, being in Sweden is a different story. OP is in the UK and unless he is up north in Scotland his winters are moderate and there is absolutely no need to place trees in autumn in a greenhouse.
Concerning Wendorff: of course they keep their trees in a greenhouse, but that is one with climate control.

Nope. Wendorff do not have climate control in the greenhouse for hardy trees. Yes, they have climate control for the tropical tree greenhouse. Without it they would die in winter. But we are talking hardy trees in this thread.
Putting hardy trees into greenhouse for winter may not be necessary in UK, Sweden or Germany. But it sure do not hurt them. I would even say that it benefits them.

Hi, I’m pleased you have put me right on this regarding not needing to keep my bonsai trees in the greenhouse over the winter time during Autumn and Winter. ?There does seem a lot of confusion regarding this subject and it would be interesting to know out of all the members that visit the forum how many people based in the UK actually do keep their trees in a greenhouse. ?
Maybe a vote of some kind may make a good thread for the forum and see what others have to say just as a matter of interest.
Im going to take them all back out of the greenhouse in the morning and put them back where they were as I prefer to do this anyhow rather than clutter them all up in the green house. ?
Like you mentioned trees in the wild and in the forest they don’t have this option so what you mentioned makes sense.
Many Thanks
Ian

Hi, Thanks for getting back to me, I’m going to leave my bonsai’s outside now as here in Lincolnshire we don’t have that many nights where we get below maybe -2-5 degrees so I can’t see it being an issue. ?Our winters in the UK are getting milder every year lately so I can’t see me having sleepless nights.?
Thanks Ian
