What criteria can you asses a young bonsai by? was created by Ana

Posted 9 years 2 months ago #25302
Im will plant a bonsai for my personal project soon (myp programme) and I have to come with criteria to asses my product by (the bonsai). So, I was wondering what kind of criteria I could asses it by other than health? I have done a lot of research on bonsai but I haven't planted any bonsai of my own (only regular plants) which makes me a total beginner. My bonsai that I will present at the expedition would be very young (I would say 1-3 years old depending on whether I am buying one or starting totally from scratch)

Any suggestions would be really helpful as I am totally stuck

A 1-3 year old plant is a sapling, not a bonsai. Creating a convincing bonsai from a sapling takes decades.

I have to come with criteria to asses my product by (the bonsai)

Here's something to get you started. I just Googled that using some keywords from your post.

Do note this concerns assessing real bonsai, not bonsai wannabe plants from Walmart, Home Depot, Ikea, or that friendly chinese man at the roadside stall.

Another tip is to first research what bonsai really is. Check on this page, 'what is bonsai'.

You see I am a beginner...and I didn't know the word for it in english...
Anyhow
For my expedition I will ask to borrow actual bonsai from my instructor so I could maybe show the different stages of growth and development
but I am not there yet.
I guess for my own product I am going to have to present a sapling because there isn't enough time for me to grow a bonsai . So, my question is how can I asses the quality of my sapling ?? (im having trouble as assessing a sapling wouldn't be as "easy" as assessing a bonsai with distinctive features- right???)

Assessing a sapling is easy:
- Will it thrive in the environment I can offer it
- Is it suitable for bonsai

But it is rather silly. It is like presenting clay as an example for the brick castle you are going to build.

Actually, I got it wrong. A tree that is less than 3 years old is a seedling, not a sapling.

I am aware its a bit silly but this project is very important and I really can't change it now.
From what you've said I've been thinking whether or not I should buy a plant older than seedling stage off my instructor but then again thats not as meaningful as planting my own

Was this your own idea, or your instructor's? Does the instructor actually know anything about bonsai?

Does he sell plants? How old are these, have they been trained as bonsai?

Seems like an impossible assignment - unless when you can afford a real bonsai (which will cost a lot) or a good pre-bonsai (which will still cost a lot). Do not buy a mallsai (look up the term). If you assess these as bonsai, they will score no points.

Unless when I don't understand the assignment and it is about assessing the potential of a tree as a (far) future bonsai.

yeah he sells them (he's a gardener) , their his own and he's learned from a master in japan.
I think I am going to have to asses the potential of a tree as I am aware of the price of legitimate bonsai. I just really want to get a good grade because this project is required for me to get my diploma (with passing grade of course) and the product is important (actually the most important part is the reflection but still). I don't want to buy/produce bonsai/seedling of bad quality as I am genuinely interested in the topic and would like to keep this as a hobby in the future.

Could you get a picture of one or even some of his trees? I'd like to assess those to see his level. It will give me an idea of his skills and knowledge and what he expects.

See it like this: can you assess this artwork?

You can't. Potentially, it is a masterpiece. In reality, it is an empty canvas and painting materials. It is the artist who creates the result.

Yes, but probably only by the end of next week because I am not meeting with him until then.
