I see. I don't think that's how it works. You'd let lower branches grow freely, so the trunk below the selected branch thickens.

Defoliating is done to get smaller leaves. That hardly seems necessary for serissa's.

Pruning back to 4 leaves is done to get ramification.

Defoliating also causes more smaller branches, that in turn can be pruned back. I just thought ramification was a good thing. Even for this type of tree.

Of course it is, but it does not:

thicken the trunk and the roots

here what happens with the new growth, they are 2-3 time thicker in growth through constant top clipping ,however if they while lose ? of there diameter when turning into wood. I don't have a detailed picture of the trunks, but if you look at the old pictures, you can see almost an 50% increase in trunk thickness. All trees being always kept in pots. So we can say proven by this pictures, yes there is an increase of branch and trunk thickness.

I don't think the increased trunk thickness is caused by pruning.
Try and prune one tree, and not prune another one at all. You'll see the last one grow a thicker trunk much faster.

I did that, it had not any change, except wild thin large shooting branches, not change on the trunk compare to the others.
Only achievement I got the crown close to the same hight then the others. But pruning the top and keep it close to the same hight, sit improve the thickness of the roots and trunk.

Maybe you should have left it on longer, until it was thick enough to have an effect.
But of course, you are entitled to your own opinion, even if it conflicts with the general consensus about creating taper.

Noted thank you, the question now would be what is thick enough, I guess that the trees still grow and thicken up in the future.
