Just note: If you go to a big box store, do not look at the bonsai sold. Go straight for the hedging material. They are much bigger, cheaer and better material to practice on. In the long run I would bet the outcome is better too.

Chinese elms are great for beginners as well. Being one myself, I plan or purchasing one this something the is springs.
